Black & white photography shows more aesthetic subtleties—detail, more subtle skin tones, more saturated blacks, better control of depth of field, etc. Detail in the shadowy areas is beautifully articulated—although the issue of contrast in the blacks is more complicated than it seems—the total dynamic range from black to very black is beautiful, rich, and nuanced. It has an appealing clarity that seems fresher than digital, more realistic. The classic values and the time-honored conventions of photography are clearly done best by black and white images. They are a rich and eye-opening opportunity of how technology affects art.
